Greensburg, PA – The Glenville State Pioneers stormed back from an early ten point deficit and went on to steam roll the Seton Hill Griffins by a 63-44 score.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard first as they completed a trick play, via an end-around pass from Sean Randall when he hit Jorge Valdovinos in stride for a 51 TD yarder to go up 7-0. The Pioneers came right back as Steffen Colon hit Jordan Griffin for a five yard touchdown pass to knot the game at 7 apiece near the end of the first quarter.
In the second stanza, Seton Hill drove 47 yards in four plays as DJ Lenehan hit A. Armstead on a 41 yard touchdown pass making the score 14-7.
GSC fired back on their first play of their next drive as Steffen Colon hit Antwan Stewart on a wide receiver screen. Stewart made several Seton Hill Players miss as he took it 61 yards to pay-dirt tying the game at 14 apiece.
The Griffins next drive stalled out, but Steve Padilla connected on a 19 yard field goal and they took a 17-14 lead. The Pioneers again stormed right back and scored before halftime as Jordan Griffin caught his second touchdown of the half on a 19 yard pass from Steffen Colon and the Pioneers would take their first lead of the game 21-17 with only 35 seconds left to play.
However, after a good kick return by the Griffins and a GSC penalty, Seton Hill had great field position. DJ Lenehan then found A. Armstead on a four yard pass as Seton Hill took a 24-21 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter Seton Hill drove right down the field in eight plays, racking up 62 yards as DJ Lenehan hit Jorge Valdovinos scored on a 19 yard pass. The Griffins took a ten point lead at 31-21.
On GSC’s next possession Steffen Colon connected with Jakharie Murphy on a huge third down and seven as Murphy made a great leaping catch and took it 71 yards to the end-zone cutting the lead to 28-31.
After a Seton Hill fumble the Pioneers went three and out, but a great punt by Tanner Collins pinned the Griffins on their own one yard line. DJ Lenehan was picked off by Matt Parker, who was standing at the one yard line when he made the interception, and Parker calmly stepped into the end-zone for the one yard TD return. GSC went up 35-31 at that point.
The Pioneers defense would then force the Griffins to punt on their next possession, and GSC found the end-zone again as Antwan Stewart hauled in his second touchdown of the day when Steffen Colon hit the senior receiver from 14 yards out putting the Pioneers up 42-31.
The GSC defense forced another Griffins’ fumble, and the Pioneers would score another touchdown on the ensuing possession as Steffen Colon hit Jordan Griffin over the middle with a short pass. Griffin outran several defenders en route to the end-zone for his third touchdown of the day; this one from 67 yards out, and the Pioneers went up 49-31.
GSC scored again as Kareem Alexander rumbled over the goal line on a one yard touchdown at the 5:50 mark in the fourth quarter making it 56-31.
Seton Hill though would not go quietly. The Griffins scored again as DJ Lenehan found Sean Randall on a two yard touchdown pass making it 38-56.
After an onside kick recovery by the Griffins, they then drove 50 yards in eight plays, when DJ Lenehan again hit Jorge Valdvoinos on a ten yard touchdown making it 44-56 with only 2:46 left to play in the game.
GSC would prove to be too much though as Kareem Alexander scored another late touchdown from four yards out as the Pioneers went on to win 63-44.
The Pioneers were led by Joe Mesadieu on the ground with 20 carriers for 114 yards while Kareem Alexander toted the ball 14 times for 35 yards and two touchdowns.
Steffen Colon went 10 for 19 for 293 yards through the air with six touchdowns to turn in a great performance.
Jordan Griffin caught six passes for 128 yards and three touchdowns while Antwan Stewart caught three balls for 94 yards and two touchdowns. Additionally, Jakharie Murphy caught one pass for 71 yards and a touchdown.
Max Beaubrun and Nate Ingersoll led the GSC defense with eight tackles each. Terry Reese, Claude Tindong, and Matt Parker all had interceptions in the game.
David Miller led the rushing attack for Seton Hill with 12 carries for 72 yards.
DJ Lenehan went 23 for 38 for 292 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions.
Jorge Valdovinos caught seven passes for 143 yards and three touchdowns.
Nick McGahagan led the Griffins defense with 12 tackles on the day.
The Pioneers end the 2011 season with a win over Seton Hill and finish the season 5-6 on the year.
