Glenville, WV – Glenville State College Associate Professor of Psychology Dr. Fred Walborn spent his last two summers as an instructor at sea aboard Naval ships. Walborn spent the summer of 2010 aboard the USS Eisenhower aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf and the summer of 2011 on the USS Barry destroyer in the Mediterranean Sea. He taught
developmental and introductory psychology classes for six weeks to members of the United States Navy. The program was sponsored by the Central Texas College and allowed him to enjoy many sight-seeing opportunities.
“I love being able to teach in a different environment. I’ve used my teaching abilities to travel the world and experience different cultures, which is a passion of mine. While an instructor at sea, I have been to Italy, Spain, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia just to name a few. This is definitely an opportunity I encourage all educators to look into,” said Walborn.
Walborn has worked at GSC for eight years. “The people at Glenville State College are wonderful. I think the faculty and staff work well together to benefit the students. All of the students I have met have amazing values and are hard workers,” said Walborn. He plans on teaching at sea again in the summer of 2012.
A native of Illinois, Walborn received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Illinois. He earned his master’s in experimental psychology at Western Illinois University and his master’s and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from Alliant International University. He has two sons. Walborn received the GSC Faculty Award of Excellence in May 2011.
