Glenville State College is among dozens of colleges and universities that participated in Higher Education Day at the West Virginia State Capitol Building. The annual event was held on Tuesday, February 13, 2007, as one of the many special activities taking place in the Capitol Rotunda during the West Virginia Legislative Session.

GSC Public Relations and Marketing Director Annette Barnette said, “I am pleased Glenville State College was again part of Higher Education Day at the Legislature. The event saluted West Virginia’s higher education institutions and provided potential students, state lawmakers, and many others with the chance to learn more about post-secondary educational opportunities we have in the Mountain State.”

Along with Barnette, others representing Glenville State College at Higher Education Day were GSC President Dr. Peter Barr and his wife Betsy Barr, Dr. Barr’s Executive Assistant Teresa Sterns, GSC Alumni Affairs Director Debbie Nagy, GSC Alumni Council Member John Hoover of Charleston who graduated from GSC in 1966, GSC Dean of Teacher Education Dr. Deb Harrison, and GSC Board of Governors Member Marge Burke.

The event was hosted by Dr. Brian Noland, Chancellor of the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, Mr. Jim Skidmore, Chancellor of the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education, and Dr. Paul Chewning, President of West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. College and university information was on display from 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. that day in the upper rotunda of the State Capitol. The Commission’s and Council’s Office of Financial Aid and Outreach Services, West Virginia Network for Educational Telecomputing (WVNET) and West Virginia Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) also had displays available.

At 10:00 a.m., West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III presented Chancellor Noland, Chancellor Skidmore, President Chewning, and the college and university presidents including GSC’s Dr. Peter Barr with a proclamation declaring February 13, 2007, as Higher Education Day. Similar ceremonies also took place in the House of Delegates and the Senate chambers later that morning. During the West Virginia House of Delegates session that day, member Brent Boggs introduced those who attended Higher Education Day to represent Glenville State College.
