The Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France experienced a catastrophic fire, resulting in the collapse of its famous spire. Almost 400 firefighters worked together for nine hours in an effort to cease the fire. The fire began at 7 p.m., only minutes after the cathedral had closed to the public. 30,000 people generally visit the church daily. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, has made a vow to rebuild the cathedral, seeking both French and international help to do so.

The Cathedral is one of the most notable monuments in Paris, as well as all of Europe. The building of the cathedral was completed over the course of 200 years; it began in 1163 during the reign of King Louis VII and was finished in 1345. There were many historical events which took place inside the cathedral such as the crowning of Henry VI of England in 1431 and later in 1804 when Napoleon was crowned Emperor.

Among other historic moments housed by the cathedral, Joan of Arc, one of the most famous women in history, was beatified there by Pope Pius X in 1909. She is acclaimed as a brave girl who received visions from God. Joan of Arc helped France in battles against the English troops, helping France beat England many times. Joan of Arc was captured by the Burundians’ and accused of heresy, she was found guilty and then burned at the stake. On July 7, 1456, she was declared innocent and a martyr.

The cause of the fire is undergoing investigation, but some experts believe that the renovations that were taking place on the building could have been the cause; as of now it’s being treated as an accident. The French President has urged the citizens Tuesday night to come together in the aftermath of the fire. Mr. Macron stated, “So, yes, we will rebuild Notre Dame Cathedral, more beautiful than ever, and I want this to be finished in five years. We can do it and we will mobilize to do so.”
