Freddie Simpson Memorial

In the fall of 2011, Glenville State College suffered the loss of a new but well loved student. Frederick “Freddie” Simpson was an avid Boy Scout and became involved with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Guild. Early in his first semester he had a panic attack and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. Sadly, he died on the way. Robert Hensley, president of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Guild, said, “I knew Freddie personally. He was the first person I talked to [...]

Dr. Neal Corwell, an accomplished euphonium player, will be performing a recital Friday, September 13 in the auditorium of the Fine Arts Building. The recital begins at 11 a.m. and will last until 1:30 p.m. Corwell began his trek as a professional musician over 32 years ago and since has worked hard to get recognition for the euphonium as a solo instrument. A euphonium is a tenor-voiced brass instrument that gets its name from the Greek word euphonos which means “well-sounding”. In 1981 Corwell earned [...]

A.R.T. Club to Unveil Bench Project

A.R.T. Club to Unveil Bench Project Glenville State College has always had a tradition of community involvement with projects that benefit the town as well as the school. Recently Alpha Rho Tau, the art club at GSC, has started a project in conjunction with the local schools to spruce up the appearance of downtown Glenville. They have taken the plain wooden benches from off the streets, sanded them down and delivered them to the area schools to paint as they desire. “Alpha Rho Tau’s [...]

This is Your Brain…on Spring Break

This is Your Brain…on Spring Break

This is Your Brain…on Spring Break While this pause in the semester for spring recess gives us all a much needed break from the papers and exams of midterm week, for many, this will be a time when their education takes a back seat to personal desires. While we all welcome this distraction from the continuous pressures of scholarly pursuit, most of us do not take advantage of this time to keep up with school work. Many will go to warmer climates for spring break [...]

Club Spotlight: Fencing

Club Spotlight: Fencing

As part of International week, one of the sporting events introduced was fencing. While fencing certainly is present here in America it isn’t as common as it is over in Europe. However, after a few years of “taking a vacation” the fencing club may be back for good at Glenville State College. Supervisor of the club, Dr. Wood, doesn’t expect anyone to be the next gold medalist in the upcoming Olympics. “I just want people to be familiar with it,” says Wood. Familiarizing people with [...]

Club Spotlight: GSC Lacrosse

Several schools in the WVIAC have added the sport of lacrosse as a competitive sport. While it isn’t yet considered a conference sport it should only take a few more schools in the WVIAC adding lacrosse for it to be officially a conference sport. Glenville State, not one to be left behind in the athletic world, quickly added lacrosse as a club. Dave Bernier, High Adventure Club supervisor, is currently the faculty member in charge of the sport. However, if interested in joining the club, [...]

Exploring the Mountain State

Exploring the Mountain State

Exploring the Mountain State With the return of a chill to the evenings, and the leaves preparing to fall, I am reminded again of the natural beauty of West Virginia.  From the mountain tops to the valley bottoms, this state offers some of the most beautiful scenery in America with Glenville sitting in the heart of it all. For those unfamiliar with the local changes of the seasons, fall, then winter will soon be upon us.  With the drop in temperature compared with previous weeks, [...]
