Pioneers Fall to Shepherd Rams

The Shepherd Rams came out on top over the Glenville State Pioneers in a very important conference game with a score of 34-23.

The Pioneers defense proved how strong they truly were on the Rams first drive, when Demetrius “DQ” Quarles, Glenville State’s cornerback, intercepted the ball and returned it 59 yards for a Pioneer touchdown. The Pioneers quickly took the lead with a score of 7-0.

On the kickoff, the Rams fumbled the kick return and Glenville State’s Emmanuel Hernandez recovered it. Unfortunately, the Pioneers were unable to score as Colston Bayless missed a 41 yard field goal. Shepherd then drove the ball 76 yards on 12 plays and scored a touchdown, tying the score at 7-7.

In the second quarter, the Rams took the lead as they scored on a two yard run making the score 14-7, but the Pioneers weren’t ready to give up.  On Glenville’s next possession, Justin Feagin threw to the hands of Robert “RJ” Jiles for a 63 yard touchdown. Both teams ended the half with a tied score of 14-14.

In the third quarter, the Pioneers were sure to score first as Bayless kicked a 34 yard field goal. Bayless’ field goal put the Pioneers ahead on the scoreboard 17-14 with ten minutes left to play in the quarter. The Pioneers kept the Rams from scoring, ending the quarter with a score of 17-14 going into the fourth.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the Rams were quick to find the end zone as they scored from three yards out, putting them in the lead 20-17. With the Pioneers down, they blocked the point after kick to keep it a one possession game. Once again, Feagin found Jiles, this time from 36 yards out putting the Pioneers up 23-20, as the Pioneers point after kick was blocked with 1:59 left to play.

Shepherd drove the ball 67 yards on three possessions as they regained the lead 27-23 with 1:38 left in the fourth quarter. The Pioneers had one more chance to score and walk away with the win, but Tony Guidugli, who was replacing injured Feagin, threw an interception that the Rams would score on winning the game 34-23.

Rahmann Lee lead the Pioneers in rushing for 40 yards on 12 carries. Feagin completed 17 of 33 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns. Jiles caught five passes for 128 yards and scored two touchdowns. Orlandus Harris also caught five passes but for only 50 yards.
