Fall Sports Underway

This past weekend proved to be a big one for the athletic teams of Glenville State College. The football team made the trip to Virginia Military Institute to take on the Division I-FCS Keydets. Although VMI expected the Pioneers to be just an easy opening game for the Keydets, the Pioneers went into the game with plans of their own. At the end of regulation, the Pioneers found themselves trailing 34-27. As if that was not close enough, the Pioneers also found themselves just one yard from the Keydet endzone when time ran out. Coming so close to a victory and losing is always a heartbreaking experience, however; the Pioneers were able to come away from the game with an excellent outlook of this year’s team.

One positive area for the Pioneers was certainly their passing game. Senior quarterback Steffen Colon passed for over 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns against the Keydet defense. Rahman Lee, the sophomore running back, complemented the passing game with 146 yards and a score. Although the offense was clicking for the Pioneers, the team was unable to overcome the early deficit.

Despite the loss, the Pioneers will be very confident as they make the trip to Wheeling to take on the Hilltoppers of West Liberty University this Saturday September14. The Hilltoppers suffered a heartbreaking loss of their own last week as they were defeated 10-9 by Catawba College . Both teams will be looking to not only avenge these losses, but they will also be looking to set the bar in the newly formed Mountain East Conference.

The football team was not the only athletic team in action this past weekend. The volleyball team played host to an invitational tournament as well. The Lady Pioneers came out of the weekend tournament boasting a 2-2 record. The team set off on a hot start as they won their first two games. However, the Lady Pioneers fell victim to their next two opponents. The team will have a chance to get back on the winning track as they travel to West Chester, Pennsylvania this weekend to participate in the West Chester Volleyball invite.
