Pioneers win easily over CaviliersBy Jacob Clevenger | October 24th, 2013 | Category: Lead Story, Sports, Uncategorized | No Comments »
The Pioneers of Glenville State College welcomed Mountain East Conference foe UVA-Wise to Morris Stadium this past Saturday for the first meeting between the two teams. Despite the unpleasant weather, the day turned out to be a very good one for the Pioneers as they were able to beat the Cavilers by a final score of 49-7.
The Pioneers scored early and often over the course of the game. However, their first score came in an unlikely fashion. As the Cavaliers lined up to take a 3-0 lead on a field goal, defensive back Darren Elliot was able to block the field goal and take it sixty six yards for the Glenville touchdown. This exciting score sparked a Pioneer offense which has at times been inconsistent.
The Pioneers found the end zone nice more to give themselves a 21-7 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. Despites the hopes of the Cavaliers, the second half belonged completely to the Pioneers. The second half scoring frenzy by the Pioneers was highlighted by a fifty two yard Rahman Lee touchdown run. Lee finished the day with an impressive 174 yards on only seventeen carries. While the Pioneers accumulated over two hundred fifty yards on the ground, they were able to hold the Cavaliers to only eight yards on the day.
This strong defensive effort was helped tremendously by a pair of interceptions. Darren Elliot and Keith Mayes both recorded interceptions on the day. The defensive line also played an important role as they were able to consistently hold the Cavalier’s running game at a standstill.
Offensively the Pioneers were able to provide several players with valuable game time experience. Both Sean Steele and Steffen Colon played well at the quarterback position. On the day, they combined to go fifteen of twenty through the air for 218 yards. Tight end Jake Harper was the leading receiver for the Pioneers with three catches for sixty- one yards and a score.
The Pioneers now 3-4 on the season look to even their record this coming weekend as they travel north to take on Notre Dame of Cleveland. With a win the Pioneers could potentially begin a journey towards a somewhat successful season.
