Basketball season gets underwayBy Jacob Clevenger | October 24th, 2013 | Category: Sports | No Comments »
Cold weather has settled in over Glenville, West Virginia and it is time for yet another sports season to begin. As Winter quickly approaches, the men’s basketball team is beginning to prepare for their inaugural season in the Mountain East Conference. Coming off of a 13-16 campaign Coach Stephen Dye will look to rebuild the team into a dominant squad in the newly formed conference. However, he will have to do so with a revamped roster and coach staff.
The off season marked several changes for the Pioneer hoops squad. Assistant coaches Rob Summers and Joe Mazzulla left for James Madison and Fairmont State University respectively. This sudden change in the coaching staff also created a major change in the roster. Amongst these changes was the departure of the team’s leading scorer from last season, Jamel Morris.
Despite the teams losses, the team returns three starters from last year’s team. Lamar Mallory, JJ Vazquez, and Kevin Gray will all look to play a major role in the success of this year’s squad. In addition to the returning players, several newcomers have joined the Pioneers. The team will look to correct last year’s mistakes and make a run at the conference title.
The Pioneers will have an opportunity to begin this quest on November 9 as they travel to Philippi to take on Alderson Broadus. Fans will have an opportunity to catch they Pioneers at home on November 25 as they take on rival Fairmont State.
