2008 Statewide Student Business Plan Competition. This competition allows college or university students in West Virginia the opportunity to submit a business idea to be evaluated by a panel of professors, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, CPA’s, and business lawyers. The winner of the competition is awarded $10,000 to implement his or her business plan. This is the second annual competition, which is sponsored by the West Virginia University Entrepreneurship Center.

The guest speaker at the GSC forum was Margie Starcher of Spencer, West Virginia, who was the winner of the 2007 Student Business Plan Competition. Margie and her brother Will created an innovative easel for the art industry called the Spider Easel. Their winning business plan gave them the capital and contact with business professionals that allowed them to start their company Arachnovation.

During her presentation, Starcher walked the GSC students in attendance through the entire process of entering this year’s competition. “Margie’s first hand experience and knowledge of going through the process and her obvious passion, along with the success she has achieved, should motivate the students in attendance to go forward with their plans,” said Cinda Echard, Associate Professor of Vocational Business at GSC. It is anticipated that five GSC students will be submitting business plans for the 2008 statewide competition. One of those students, Andrew Reed of Grafton, West Virginia, a freshman at GSC, intends to enter a business plan for a Fitness Center & Spa in the 2008 competition. Last year, Reed finished fifth in the High School division of the Student Business Plan Competition.
