GLENVILLE, WV â Glenville State College Professor of History Dr. Art DeMatteo is the 2014 recipient of the GSC Faculty Award of Excellence. DeMatteo, who has worked at GSC for ten years, received the award at the 140th GSC Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 10th.
"Commencement Saturday was one of the best days of my life. Winning the Faculty Award of Excellence completely floored me; I never saw it coming. We have so many outstanding teachers on our campus, many of whom also deserve recognition, so the award is extra-special to me, and very humbling, as well. This honor also inspires me to work even harder to be an even more effective teacher," said DeMatteo.
Other faculty members who nominated DeMatteo for the award observed that he "has developed a reputation as a tough but fair instructor who receives high marks in all categories of student evaluations," and that students respect his "professional enthusiasm" and "entertaining and spirited lectures."
"One of the best things about teaching here at Glenville is the positive attitude of the students. Many of them are first-generation college students and, with maybe a few exceptions, they seem to understand the importance of the opportunity they have. They are very teachable and very respectful. I usually cannot wait to get to class every day â the students make it fun and rewarding," said DeMatteo.
DeMatteo received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History in 1986 and a Masters of History in 1988 from Cleveland State University. In 1999, he was awarded a Doctorate in Urban and Labor History from the University of Akron. He is a past President of the Gilmer County Historical Society, is the Faculty Advisor for the GSC Social Science Honor Society Pi Gamma Mu, is a member of GSC's Faculty Senate, and participates in the GSC Honors Program Task Force. In October of 2012, he served as a member of a distinguished panel at a public forum that discussed the 'Electoral College process and the National Popular Vote Bill' at West Virginia State University.
He has been married to his wife, Betty, for 38 years. The couple has two daughters, three grandsons, and two step-grandchildren.
