GLENVILLE, WV - Denise Ellyson, Certification Analyst for the Registrar’s Office at Glenville State College, has been selected to receive the 2013 Pete and Betsy Barr Professional Development Award.

"Pete and I are thrilled that Denise received this year’s award as she is truly deserving. Her years of service and her dedication to our students are remarkable. Congratulations Denise," said Betsy Barr.

Ellyson receives Barr award

Glenville State College President Peter Barr and his wife Betsy recently completed their pledge for the Peter and Betsy Barr Professional Development Endowment. With their total donations to the fund exceeding $57,000 over the past three years, the endowment will now be able to support the annual $2,500 award from interest earned. The recipient of the award may use the funds to further his or her professional growth and development. The award is rotated annually between faculty and staff. The funds must be used within eighteen months of being awarded.

As this year’s staff recipient, Ellyson used the $2,500 award to fund travel and attendance expenses for herself and GSC Associate Registrar Ann Reed to a three-day conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in April of 2013.

"I was very surprised and happy to receive the Peter & Betsy Barr Professional Development Award. After spending the last year preparing Degree Works for Glenville State College, the Ellucian National Conference gave me an opportunity to learn about what is planned for future releases of Degree Works, review highlights of recent releases, and network with other users," said Ellyson.

"The Registrar’s Office recently released the availability of Degree Works. Attending the conference gave us the opportunity to learn how to enhance our use of this program and will assist us in moving our office toward our overall goal of increasing services to our students and faculty," said Reed.

Ellyson has worked at GSC since 1979. She is a 1974 graduate of the West Virginia Business College and received an Associate of Arts degree and Regents Bachelor of Arts degree from GSC in 1996.

Along with her husband Terry and son Lee, both former GSC students, the Ellysons own and operate the Ellyson Mortuary in Glenville. Lee's wife Wakasa is also a GSC graduate. Lee and Wakasa are the proud parents of one daughter, six year old Allie.

Previous recipients of the Barr Award were: GSC Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Sara Sawyer (2010), Administrative Secretary for the GSC Department of Athletic and Title IX Coordinator/Senior Women’s Administrator Amanda Frymier (2011), and Associate Professor of Business Cheryl Fleming McKinney, CPA (2012).

The 2014 Barr Award will be presented in January 2014 to a selected faculty applicant. A committee comprised of two faculty members and two staff representatives reviews all applications and selects the awardee.
