Literature Fair at GSC

GLENVILLE, WV - Over eighty students from around the area gathered recently at Glenville State College for a Literature Fair sponsored by District V of the West Virginia Reading Association (WVRA). District V consists of Braxton, Calhoun, Clay, Gilmer, Kanawha, Nicholas, Roane, and Webster Counties.

Students from Gilmer, Nicholas, and Webster Counties in grades K-12 presented sixty-four reading projects. Individuals, pairs, and classroom projects were on display and many students even dressed in character to match their project. Overall best of show awards were given to K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 grade divisions. Those winners received a purple ribbon and were invited to display their projects at the 60th Annual WVRA Conference to be held at The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs this November.

Dr. Shara Curry, associate professor in the Teacher Education Department at GSC, commented that she thoroughly enjoyed working with the teachers involved in the WVRA and helping to plan the Literature Festival. "It was a joy to host the event and have the K-12 students on the campus of GSC! Many of them had never been here before and the high school students were especially interested in the campus tour led by Josh James from our Admissions Office."

Judges included teachers from Nicholas, Gilmer, and Webster Counties and Dr. Kevin Cain, Connie O'Dell, Dr. Tara Cosco, and Dr. Shelly Ratliff, all of whom are professors in GSC's Teacher Education Department. GSC education majors Dancey Howes, Kayla Rose, Athena Morris, Kennedy Cochran, and Katie Stover served as greeters to the K-12 students and their families and organized crafts and games for the students between presentations.
