Glenville, WV – Five students from the Department of Land Resources are pioneering their future within the Glenville State College’s Honors Program, an interdisciplinary program that examines the world around us, explores diversity, advances research, promotes civic engagement, and prepares leaders for the 21st century.

Katlyne Rollyson is a freshman forest technology major within the natural resource management program from Sandyville, West Virginia. For Rollyson, it was her interest in the environment that led her to Glenville State College. “I decided to major in forest technology because I have an interest in plants and the environment,” said Rollyson. “My interest began in high school when I joined the Future Farmers of America program and competed in my first contest, Grasslands. I went on to compete in several other contests, including Envirothon, Land Judging, Entomology, and forestry. I enjoyed participating in these contests so much that I wanted nothing more in my career than to work outside and help protect and manage the environment and its resources.”

“The honors program helps to benefit me because it allows me to explore and consider who I am as a person, what I want in life, and what I can do to accomplish my goals to advance my career,” she adds.

Eli Henthorn, is a senior land surveying technology major from Iuka, West Virginia. “What influenced me to enroll in the land surveying program at Glenville State was the professors,” said Henthorn. “They were very professional and personable, and are undoubtedly some of the best mentors I have had in my educational career. The honors program has been very beneficial in my development as an individual, and continues to foster a healthy desire to dig deep and succeed in the field that I have chosen.”

Jacob Amick is a sophomore land surveying technology major from Nettie, West Virginia. For Amick, it was his love for the outdoors that led him to the natural resource management program at Glenville State College. “I have always had a great appreciation for the outdoors, so when I heard about Glenville’s excellent program in natural resource management, I knew that I wanted to pursue an academic career at Glenville State College,” said Amick. “The Honors Program is helping me to build character both in professional and casual interactions, while also pushing me to my full potential as a student and as a member of the wonderful community here at the college.”

Asa Dick, is a sophomore land surveying technology major from Frankford, West Virginia. “I came to Glenville State College because I believed this program was the best way for me to start a career that incorporated my love of mapping and the land to best benefit my future and the people around me,” he said. “The Honors Program is helping me become a better leader in my field by encouraging logical, in-depth discussions that pertain to my career path.”

Jared Bishop is a freshman environmental science major from Princeton, West Virginia. “The wildlife of West Virginia has fascinated me since I was a child and it seemed natural that I would pursue a career in a field related to my outdoor lifestyle,” said Bishop. “I became acquainted with the campus through Hidden Promise, and after attending camp for four years, taking multiple tours, and speaking with students and professors in this field, Glenville State College seemed like the perfect fit. With a degree in environmental science, I have many career options through both the government and private ventures. I plan on using my degree to either become a Wildlife Biologist with the Department of Natural Resources or to open my own trout hatchery.”

“The Honors Program at GSC will aid greatly in my academic success, further education, and ultimately my career. While I have only been involved with the program for a short time, I have developed better communication and leadership skills, as well as an ability to think critically about a wide array of topics. The program also provides wonderful out-of-classroom experiences such as field trips and seminars,” adds Bishop.

Honors students take specialized classes that are distinctive in content along with other Honors students. They engage in independent scholarship with faculty mentors who are experts in their field and engage in enriching, out-of-class experiences by participating in field trips, seminars, conferences, community projects, and workshops. The students finish their Honors studies by completing a final project under the guidance of the Honors Coordinator and faculty mentors. Students who complete the Honors Program receive unique distinction on their transcripts and during graduation ceremonies.
