Glenville State Announces Finalists for Presidential Search

GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State College has invited five presidential candidate finalists to campus following the withdrawal of one of the previously announced candidates. The finalists were previously scheduled to visit campus on March 25, 26, and 27 but those visits have been tentatively delayed until April 22, 23, and 24 due to issues related to Coronavirus. 

The finalists include:

Dr. Kellie Bean Dr. Bean is currently the Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, a position she achieved following her work at Hartwick College as the Dean of Academic Affairs. Prior to these administrative positions she held the position of Provost at Lyndon State College in northern Vermont and more than a decade as the Associate Dean of Liberal Arts and a Professor of English at Marshall University in West Virginia. Throughout her career Bean has engaged in leadership supportive of civic engagement, culture, art, and social justice. She holds Baccalaureate, Masters, and Doctorate degrees in English from Ohio State University and the University of Delaware. 

Dr. Bruce Barnhart Dr. Barnhart is currently serving as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at California University of Pennsylvania. His career includes more than two decades as a faculty member and another decade as an academic administrator. His administrative roles have included positions as associate provost and positions involving responsibilities for marketing and athletics. Barnhart has earned a Doctor of Education degree in Professional Physical Education from West Virginia University and a Master of Education degree in Biology, a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Secondary Education/Biology, and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapist Assistant from California University of Pennsylvania. 

Dr. Mark Manchin Dr. Manchin is currently serving as the Superintendent of the Harrison County Board of Education. Prior to serving in this role he served as the Executive Director of the School Building Authority of West Virginia, the Superintendent of McDowell County and Webster County Schools, a classroom teacher at Jackson Junior High School, and as an adjunct professor at West Virginia University. He served as a State Senator for the State of West Virginia and has served on the Board of Governors for West Virginia University. Manchin earned a Doctorate in Educational Administration and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Administration from West Virginia University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Fairmont State University. 

Dr. Richard Pagan Dr. Pagan is currently serving as the Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs at New River Community and Technical College. Prior to this position, he held the following academic positions:  Senior Vice President and Campus Director of the National Aviation Academy in Bedford, Massachusetts, Dean of Transportation Technologies at Guilford Technical and Community College in Jamestown, North Carolina, Tenured Professor and Program Coordinator of Aviation and Aerospace Electronics Technology at Pierpont Community and Technical College, and Associate Professor and Program Coordinator for Avionics Technology at Fairmont State College. In addition to these higher education roles, Pagan has been the Founder and Executive Director of Aviation Industry Training Consultation and was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. He holds a Doctor of Education degree in Higher Education Leadership from West Virginia University, a Master of Science in Aeronautical Science from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, a Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies from Liberty University, and two Associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force. 

Dr. Herbert Riedel Dr. Riedel is currently the President and CEO of A1E, a 3D printing/additive manufacturing start-up. Prior to this role he served as President of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, Alabama, Vice President for Instruction and Student Development at Northeast Texas Community College in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Deputy Director of the Nanoscience Technology Center at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Division Chair and Department Head of Mathematics at Tri-County Technical College in Pendleton, South Carolina, a Faculty member at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at The Citadel in South Carolina, and a Post-Doctoral Lecturer at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Riedel holds a Doctorate in Pure Mathematics and a Master’s in Mathematics from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Physics from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. 

Members of the GSC community and the surrounding Glenville community will be invited to participate in open forum conversations with the presidential finalists during their on campus visits. More information about specific schedules will be available closer to the visit dates.

The responsibility of selecting a new president resides with GSC’s Board of Governors, a selection which will occur following the finalists’ on-campus visits. Following a selection by the Board, the presidential appointment will be forwarded to the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission for confirmation.

GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College Interim President Dr. Kathleen Nelson, on behalf of GSC’s Presidential Search Committee, has announced three finalists for the permanent position as GSC’s president.

Following a national search, the finalists for Glenville State College’s presidency include: 

Dr. Bruce Barnhart who currently serves as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at California University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Daniel Barwick who is currently a Senior Education Consultant for the American Education Resource Council. He previously served for eight years as the President of Independence Community College in Independence, Kansas. Prior to this presidency he served as the College’s Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs. Previous higher education administrative roles included those of Director of Institutional Advancement and work within the areas of assessment and honors programming at Alfred State College in the State University of New York (SUNY). He has also served as an Associate Professor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Humanities at Alfred State College. Barwick has a keen interest in fund-raising and is a certified fund-raising executive. He holds Doctorate, Masters, and Baccalaureate degrees in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo and Genesco and the University of Iowa.
