Glenville, WV -- Energy Express, an award-winning statewide summer reading program, kicked off its first summer at Glenville State College.

The program will serve more than thirty-five children providing two meals a day and reading-based educational activities that help children maintain their reading skills and good nutrition during the summer months.

College students and community residents serving as AmeriCorps members support the program, which began on June 25, 2007 and will continue through August 3, 2007 at the Fine Arts Building at GSC.

Major funding for Energy Express comes from the West Virginia University Extension Service, the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation, the West Virginia Commisssion for National and Community Service, the Summer Food Service Program through the West Virginia Department of Education, and the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts. In addition to these state partners, there is also a tremendous amount of local support for the program, which include: State Farm Insurance (Dan Johnson), Flying W Plastics, the Lions Club, Bill and Marge Burke, Dr. Grant, the Presbyterian Women's Club, GilCo Faith Pharmacy, FRN, Paul and Myra Woodford, Baldwin, Kanawha Drive, and Coxs Mills CEOS Clubs, the Gilmer County Board of Education, and Glenville State College.

The program depends on support from the local community to make it a success and needs volunteers to read with the children and help with other activities. If you would like to donate any of your time, please call 462-7361 ext. 7353.
