Glenville State University Donates $2,500 to Support Gorilla Youth Inc.

GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State University (GSU) has donated $2,500 to Gorilla Youth Inc. to help further its mission of empowering at-risk youth across West Virginia through athletics, leadership development, and character building.

On Wednesday, February 18, GSU President Dr. Mark A. Manchin met with representatives from Gorilla Sports to tour the facility and formally present the donation in support of Gorilla Youth’s ongoing work.

“At Glenville State University, we believe in investing in the future of West Virginia,” said Manchin. “Gorilla Youth is making a meaningful difference by helping young people develop discipline, leadership, and confidence through athletics while maintaining a strong focus on academics. We are proud to support an organization that is building stronger students, stronger athletes, and stronger communities.”

Gorilla Youth’s mission is rooted in the belief that every child in West Virginia is at risk—not because of a lack of potential, but because of limited resources and opportunities. Through sport-specific strength and conditioning programs, the organization provides free or low-cost training, equipment, and scholarships to hundreds of student-athletes. Participants are expected to maintain a minimum 2.8 GPA, remain engaged in the classroom, and involve their families in the process, reinforcing the organization’s commitment to developing the total student-athlete.

The program supports athletes across numerous sports, including football, basketball, wrestling, cross country, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, golf, track, and swimming. Gorilla Youth is also expanding into AAU competition through initiatives such as the Gorilla Strength Wrestling Club and Gorilla Youth Basketball, providing greater exposure for West Virginia athletes on regional and national stages.

Thanks to community partnerships and donor support, Gorilla Youth has helped more than 100 athletes earn college scholarships at the Division I, Division II, and other collegiate levels, while preparing others for professional opportunities.

GSU’s contribution reflects the University’s continued commitment to fostering educational access, leadership development, and community engagement throughout the Mountain State. By investing in organizations like Gorilla Youth, Glenville State University is helping ensure that West Virginia’s young people have the opportunities they need to succeed.
