GSC Accounting Majors

Glenville, WV—The Glenville State College Business Department will be sponsoring free income tax assistance through the IRS’ Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. Since implementation in 1969, thousands of volunteers have provided free tax assistance and prepared millions of federal tax returns in VITA programs for taxpayers with low to moderate income. This will be the first time in several years that the VITA program will be offered at GSC.

GSC Associate Professor of Business Cheryl McKinney CPA will be supervising eight junior and senior Accounting majors who have volunteered for the program. The students are qualified to give tax assistance only after completing an IRS training and certification course in basic income tax preparation using materials provided by the IRS. The GSC students who are volunteering are: John Crawford, Matt Facemire, Nora Hall, Michelle Kight, Tim LeRose, Sandra Moore, Holli Owens, and Jean Wallbrown.

The GSC VITA program will be located in the lower level of the Robert F. Kidd Library. Tax Assistance will be available on Mondays from 1:00-5:00 p.m. and 6:00-10:00 p.m., Tuesdays from 3:00-7:00 p.m., and Wednesdays from 5:00-9:00 p.m. February 4th through April 16th, with the exception of March 17th, 18th, and 19th, during the GSC faculty and student’s spring break. Free tax help is available to GSC students, faculty, staff, and the general public. The VITA program offers assistance to low to moderate income (generally $40,000 or below) people who need help preparing their basic income tax returns. Completed returns may be electronically filed.

Those who wish to receive this free tax assistance from the GSC VITA site should bring this year’s tax package, wage and earnings statement (Form W-2) from all employers, interest and dividend statements (Form 1099), a copy of your 2006 tax return if available, any relevant information about income and expenses, and bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit information.
