GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ALUMNI DAY

GSC’s alums will gather on campus for their special reunion weekend on April 28th. Kicking off this weekend will be a meet and greet social at the Alumni Center on Friday, April 27th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., we hope that you will join us “across the street” in the Fine Arts Center for GSC’s Spring Band Concert, which promises to be an evening of very special entertainment. On Saturday, several activities have been scheduled, culminating with the popular 6:00 p.m. evening awards banquet in the Ballroom of the Alan B. Mollohan Campus Community Center.

There will be lots of opportunity to socialize, reminisce and re-establish contact with alumni that you haven’t seen in a while. Campus buildings will be open beginning at noon for everyone to browse, reminisce and see all the improvements that the College is making to its facilities. Be sure and check out the newly renovated Mollohan Center, the first floor of the Robert F. Kidd Library, also our Archives Office and the Claude Kemper Bird Collection on the second floor of the library. Other points of interest might be seeing the upgrades in the Administration Building, our Fine Arts Center, the Athletic Hall of Fame Wall in the Physical Education Building, our new athletic facilities at Morris Stadium on Mineral Road, the Dora Heflin Garden in front of Clark Hall recognizing GSC’s first ladies, the President’s Wall on the President’s lawn honoring all of GSC’s former presidents, and our World War II memorial next to the Science Building.

The Alumni Center will be headquarters for the day’s activities with registration (tickets, name tags, and information) and social time for everyone throughout the day. Our special guests during an afternoon reception will be grads from the honor classes of 1937, 1947, 1957, 1967, 1977, 1987 and 1997.

Mountain Fury, the first professional bluegrass band coming out of Glenville State College’s Bluegrass Certificate Program, will provide the afternoon’s entertainment in the Fine Arts Center’s Auditorium from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Alumni and visitors to campus won’t want to miss this dynamic group’s performance and everyone will want to allow time to visit GSC’s Art Gallery, also in the Fine Arts Center, at some point during the afternoon. The gallery is operated by GSC Professor and Fine Arts Department Chairman, D. Duane Chapman ’93. It will be open from noon until 5:00 p.m.

The College Bookstore will be open from 1:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. giving alums an opportunity to purchase special souvenirs from their alma mater.

A brief Showing of Letters Ceremony in front of the Harry B. Heflin Administration Building will be held at 5:00 p.m. for all to see the newly attached lettering of his name across the front of the building. Alums are encouraged to join the Heflin Family for this wonderful photo opportunity in his honor and memory.

There will be meet and greet social in the pre-function area immediately outside the Ballroom of the Mollohan Center at 5:15 p.m. followed by the Alumni Banquet at 6:00 p.m. The evening’s spotlight at the banquet will be on the Alumni Association’s guests of honor: Alumnus of the Year, Dr. John Pisapia ’60; Alumni Achievement Award honoree, Mona Wilson Floyd ’74; Community Service Award recipient, Robert Buck ’57; Outstanding Educator of the Year (Public Schools), Phyllis Taylor Veith ’77; Alumni Chapter Award honoree, John Cutlip ’56; Outstanding Young Alumnus and Alumna Award honorees, Wesley “Wes” Gladwell ’94 and Sharon Westfall Gladwell ’94. The spotlight will also be on Charles “Bernie” Buttery ’76 and David “Dave” Walker ’87 for their outstanding football seasons last fall and upon the family of Dr. Harry B. Heflin ’37 as this scholar and gentleman is honored posthumously.

Recognition will also be given to members of the honor classes who have registered with the Alumni Office prior to the evening’s banquet. Prior reservations are required for the banquet ($20 each). Contact Debbie Nagy in the Alumni Office at (304) 462-4122, local or (866) 239-0285, toll free to make your reservations.
