GSC Business Department Offering Free Tax Return Assistance
Thu Apr 7, 2011

For Immediate Release:
April 5, 2011

Do you need help filing your basic Federal and West Virginia income tax returns?  If so, free assistance is once again available on the Glenville State College campus through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This year, GSC is pleased to be working collaboratively with Gilmer County Community Resources (CRI) to extend assistance to GSC students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public. The deadline for filing tax returns is Monday, April 18, 2011.

The GSC Department of Business provides this service through the Accounting 399 course, and senior accounting majors, who are IRS certified, to assist low to moderate income people (generally those making $49,000 or below) who need help preparing their basic Federal and West Virginia income tax returns.  All returns may be electronically filed.

The site is located in the basement of the Robert F. Kidd Library and operates on Tuesdays from 3:00 -7:00 pm. Tuesday April 12th will be the final day this free service will be available.

Those who wish to receive this free tax assistance from the GSC VITA site should bring: a copy of your 2009 tax return, if available, wage and earning statements (Form W-2) from all employers, interest and dividend statements (Form 1099), any other relevant information or forms relating to income and expenses, social Security cards for taxpayers and dependents, if available, and bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit/direct payment, if desired.

Also, students and anyone who received financial aid and/or paid tuition and fees: must have a copy of the Tuition Statement (Form 1098-T) that you should have received from GSC before we can complete your tax return.  If you cannot locate that document, you may be able to request a duplicate copy from the Cashier’s Office. Please have Form 1098-T in hand when you come to the VITA site so you can be assisted in a timely manner.
