GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College archivist and reference librarian Jason Gum has been reelected to serve another three-year term on the program committee for the West Virginia Humanities Council. Gum will serve from June 1, 2019 through June 1, 2022.

The Humanities Council budgets more than $800,000 for grants and programs annually. A variety of grants are offered to nonprofit organizations that support educational programming. The program committee recommends funding decisions to the Humanities Council board of directors. The 22-member committee includes 11 members drawn from the Council board and 11 citizen members who represent education and the general public.

“It is an honor to be able to serve on the program committee of the WV Humanities Council. The work of the council has been of the utmost importance in acknowledging and advancing the study of WV’s people, their culture, and history. I look forward to providing input on how to best utilize a few of our public resources that are available to support the development of our states many, beneficial, non-profit entities,” said Gum.

Gum, who is a 2005 GSC alumnus, received a “History Hero” award from the WV Division of Culture and History based on a nomination from the Gilmer County Historical Society in 2016. He has also devoted significant time toward digitally archiving college yearbooks, campus newspapers, and several old 8- and 16-mm films. He is also a member of the campus committee preparing for GSC’s next Higher Learning Commission accreditation visit.

The West Virginia Humanities Council is a nonprofit corporation governed by the board of directors whose members are drawn from all parts of West Virginia. It is the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, supported by the NEH, the State of West Virginia, and by contributions from a private sector. The purposes of the West Virginia Humanities Council are educational, and its mission is to support a vigorous program in the humanities statewide in West Virginia.
