Glenville, WV – Organizers of the Glenville State College Speaker Series are pleased to present poet, scholar, and philanthropist Ewuare Osayande on Thursday, October 15th in the Presidents Auditorium. This presentation, titled ‘The Legacy of John Brown’s Raid at Harpers Ferry’, will begin at 3:00 p.m. Osayande will focus on the importance of this event in both the abolitionist and civil rights movements marking the anniversary of this legendary raid.

GSC Assistant Professor of English Dr. Jonathan Minton said, “Osayande’s presentation on the legacy of John Brown’s raid in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia will be a wonderful way for the Glenville State College community to celebrate and gain additional insights about an important aspect of our state’s rich history.”

Ewuare Osayande is the poet Laureate at Rutgers University and is the co-founder and director of the non-profit organization, POWER (People Organized Working to Eradicate Racism), a grass-roots initiative that educates and empowers participants to resist oppression. He is also the creator of Project ONUS: Redefining Black Manhood. GSC American Humanics Coordinator Meredith Gillett said, “Bringing such a renowned poet and grassroots leader to Glenville State College campus can create the spark students need to follow by example and become leaders on campus and in their communities through whatever means: writing, student organizations, or community nonprofits.”

Osayande is the 2006 recipient of the Walt Whitman Arts Center Vanguard Writer’s Award. He is the author of a fantastic collection of poetry, Blood Luxury. Other books he has published range in topics from social justice, politics, and hip-hop culture. Osayande will also conduct a writer’s workshop that morning at 11:00 a.m. in Administration Building Room 304. Both events are open to the public free of charge.
