GLENVILLE STATE COLLEGE PRESIDENT REMEMBERS FORMER GSC PRESIDENT HEFLIN

Glenville, WV—The late Dr. Harry B. Heflin of Morgantown is being remembered on the campus of Glenville State College in Gilmer County after passing away last Friday. Dr. Heflin graduated from GSC in 1937 and then served as the college's president from 1947 to 1964 when he accepted the position of Vice President for Finance and Administration at WVU. He then served as Acting President twice at WVU and Vice Chancellor of the West Virginia Board of Regents as well as being appointed the 18th President of WVU.

Glenville State President Dr. Peter Barr said, "We here at Glenville State College are saddened by the loss of Dr. Heflin. He was not only a valuable asset to Glenville State, but he was also an outstanding West Virginian. Dr. Heflin impacted so many people who have told me great stories about him. Many of our alumni who were students here during his time as GSC's president say he took the time to sit and talk with the students and got to know them as individuals. We wish the best for his wife, son, and entire family."

The Glenville State College student center held Heflin’s name for almost two decades, and when the building was renovated and renamed, the GSC administration building was then named for him. He was considered a role model for many educators in West Virginia and throughout the country, and was often described as a scholar and a gentleman.

Friends may call at the Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street in Morgantown this afternoon (Monday, October 2nd) from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. The body will be moved and lie in state at Wesley United Methodist Church, 503 High Street, Morgantown on Tuesday, October 3rd, from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in St. Mary's, West Virginia on Wednesday, October 4th, at 1:00 p.m.
