GSC Professor Invited to Participate in WV Sesquicentennial Art Exhibit

GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State College Assistant Professor of Art Liza Brenner has been invited to take part in the 'A Sense of Place: The West Virginia Sesquicentennial Artist Invitational' exhibit at the Huntington Museum of Art (HMA). The exhibit includes 17 other artists from various Mountain State colleges and universities.

"I feel honored to be invited to this show and to represent Glenville State College. This is a great opportunity to meet other art professors from the state and to see their work," said Brenner.

Brenner's entry in the Sense of Place exhibit at the Huntington Museum of Art is a mixed media piece entitled "Who's Next?"

The show will include several different styles, viewpoints, and mediums that organizers hope will invoke the show's 'sense of place' theme. The pieces included in the exhibit are direct responses to the theme and are personal reflections of the artists' social and natural observations of life in West Virginia. Some pieces may also refer to the individual’s perception of the whole state and their feelings, attitudes, and influences from living, working, and residing in the state.

"My interpretation of the theme is very simple. I have always felt that the people here are friendlier than anywhere else. My painting is representing what happens when you leave the state and run into not so nice people," said Brenner. Her submission, entitled 'Who's Next?,' is a mixed media piece.

Exhibit organizers from the Huntington Museum of Art also interviewed and filmed Brenner at her own studio space and visited the GSC campus' fine arts center. That interview and footage will be incorporated into a video that will be shown at the opening reception for the show.

The opening reception for 'A Sense of Place' will be held at the HMA on Saturday, June 22nd from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The reception will include a brief video about the artists that will be shown in the Grace Rardin Doherty Auditorium. The exhibit will be on display through Sunday, September 22nd and is open to the public.

This exhibit is sponsored by the Isabelle Gwynn and Robert Daine Exhibition Endowment, the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, and the National Endowment for the Arts with approval from the West Virginia Commission on the Arts. It is presented with support from the West Virginia Department of Education and the Arts.
