Glenville, WV--Glenville State College Assistant Professor of Earth Science, Dr Joshua Kincaid, has recently authored several articles onJosh Kincaid the subject of the Eastern Hemlock. Dr. Kincaid’s interest and expertise on the subject is a result of his Doctoral Dissertation, which studied the characteristics of the Eastern Hemlock forests in the southern Appalachians.

The October 2007 edition of Two-Lane Livin, a new monthly magazine serving central West Virginia, includes one of Dr. Kincaid’s articles discussing the threat of the Woolly Adelgid, an Asian insect on the Eastern Hemlock. Two-Lane Livin is a free publication, which can be found at many locations throughout the area. Kincaid has also had an article accepted for publication in the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society titled Compositional and Environmental Characteristics of Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock) forests in the southern Appalachian Mountains. A third article by Kincaid on the structural characteristics and canopy dynamics of Tsuga canadensis forests in the Southern Appalachian Mountains has been submitted for publication in the scientific journal Plant Ecology.

The Eastern Hemlock is found throughout the Appalachian chain including West Virginia, where it comprises up to nine percent of forests in counties statewide. The Eastern Hemlock is not an important species in the timber industry but is used for pulp, mulch, and construction materials.

Dr. Kincaid is in his first year at GSC, teaching Earth Science and Biogeomorphology. “I like how quiet it is here, and love the fact that there is no traffic,” said Kincaid.

Hiking and biking are two of the interests that Kincaid pursues in his leisure time, which may soon be curtailed a little since he and his wife Holly are expecting their first child in January.
