Wed Nov 10, 2010

The Glenville State College Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Program, formerly known as American Humanics, will be sending eight students to the Management/Leadership Institute of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance this January in Orlando, Florida. The event which will be taking place at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort from January 3 – 6 is mandatory for certification in Nonprofit Leadership and Management.
“The opportunities provided by this Management Institute are like no other. Students are able to network with nonprofit professionals from all over the country and with students from a variety of nonprofit programs from more than 60 colleges and universities. The application of what students have learned so far through their academic program is the culmination of the Institute provided in the form of a case study. Being able to help solve a real problem in an established nonprofit organization takes not only knowledge of the nonprofit sector, but teamwork as well,” said Meredith Gillett, Coordinator of the minor and certification programs at GSC.

These eight students are all part of the Glenville State College Department of Business and are studying marketing, management, accounting, and other areas of business. With the Nonprofit Leadership and Management Minor and Certification students are broadening career opportunities following graduation and are able to advance more quickly in careers in the nonprofit sector. GSC added this program at the beginning of the Fall 2009 semester.

“The 2010 Nonprofit Management and Leadership Institute was an amazing experience. I learned so much more about the nonprofit sector and how I can make a career working in it. I cannot wait for January to gain even more knowledge through workshops, case studies, and guest speakers,” said 2010 Nonprofit Management and Leadership Institute Representative Matthew Thompson, a junior Marketing major from Saint Albans, West Virginia (Kanawha County).

Also in attendance at the 2010 Institute was GSC sophomore Marketing major Brittany Williamson. Williamson says, “It was a great experience that I was glad to have been a part of. Through several different workshops, displays, and meetings, I had the opportunity to gain leadership skills and networking capabilities with people from all over the country. I encourage anyone interested in this program to try it out. It is a great learning experience!” Williamson is a native of Elizabeth, West Virginia (Wirt County).

The group has held several fundraisers thus far but is still busy raising money for this trip.
