Sole Support Project GSC students in the fall 2017 Teaching Physical Education in Elementary Schools course who are collecting shoes for elementary school students

Glenville, WV – Students in Glenville State College’s PED 326 course (Teaching Physical Education in Elementary Schools) are currently collecting tennis shoes for elementary school students in Gilmer County and surrounding counties. The shoes will be used by students who don’t have access to a pair of gym shoes and by those who forget to bring a change of shoes for their physical education classes.

The initiative began a few years ago after GSC students who were completing their student teaching observation noticed that not all of the students from kindergarten to sixth grade had shoes for physical education classes. “It is encouraging to see our future teachers show this much concern about the overall well-being of the young children they will one day teach,” said GSC Professor Emerita Janet Bailey.

If you are interested in donating new or gently used shoes, collection boxes have been placed at the entrances of Clark Hall, the Health and Physical Education Building, Louis Bennett Hall near the Department of Education’s faculty offices, and the Waco Center in the Athletic Department – all on GSC’s campus. The last day to donate shoes will be Friday, October 13.
