The Glenville State College chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) is receiving national attention again. This is the second year that the GSC ACS chapter has been awarded the honor of outstanding recognition from the ACS.

Glenville State College is the only college in West Virginia to receive national recognition from ACS for the 2005-2006 academic year. The award is considered highly prestigious due to the fact that less than four percent of all chapters receive it. When asked of his feelings when the good news was received, faculty advisor Dr. Kevin Evans said, “I am extremely pleased for the students that their excellent work and commitments to promote sciences throughout West Virginia are recognized at the national level.”

The Glenville State College ACS chapter earned the award after traveling over 700 miles to perform chemical demonstrations and hands-on activities for elementary, middle and high school students at eight schools throughout West Virginia. During these outings, members give lively presentations using modern chemistry techniques. Glenville State’s ACS also brought the Rocket Boys presentations to GSC for college and local high school students to enjoy. These presentations were highly anticipated due to the fame of the West Virginia natives. Members conducted a toy drive for children affected by Hurricane Katrina as well.

Evans, along with seven students, will be attending the 233rd National ACS Meeting and Exposition in Chicago, Illinois on March 25, 2007. More than 12,000 scientists are expected to attend and over 7,000 presentations are anticipated. Glenville State College representatives will be making two of those presentations. GSC’s affiliate chapter will present a poster highlighting their accomplishments for the 2005-2006 academic year. In addition, GSC students Brenton Drake and Sarah Ramezan will present a research poster in the synthesis of alkenyl bromides and alkyl dibromides.
