GLENVILLE, WV – Glenville State University is proud to celebrate 50 years of the statewide Regents Bachelors of Arts (RBA) degree program along with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and other universities across the state.
Established by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the RBA Degree Program was created to provide a more flexible pathway to earning a baccalaureate degree for adult learners. The program was started in 1975 by the West Virginia State Board of Regents as an initiative to broaden access to bachelor’s degree completion opportunities for adult and other non-traditional students.
At Glenville State University, the RBA program serves a multitude of students who have some college credits but have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree. This program helps to create a more accessible pathway for those individuals to finish their degree in pursuit of graduate studies or advancement within their profession. An applicant’s previous academic achievements and life experiences can be evaluated and applied toward degree requirements, helping to provide students both an affordable pathway and timeline for completion. “I love working with adult learners; it is one of the highlights of my career in higher education,” said Dr. Kandas Queen, RBA Program Director at Glenville State University. “Seeing students succeed and advance in their careers because of this program is incredibly rewarding.”
Over the past five years, colleges and universities across West Virginia have awarded more than 3,200 RBA degrees. According to a recent report from the National Student Clearinghouse, in 2024 there were 179,965 West Virginians under the age of 65 who had some college credit but no completed credential. The RBA program at GSU along with all other universities in the state offer this important opportunity for those individuals to return to higher education and complete a degree on a timeline that fits their lives.
