Glenville, WV — The Glenville State University Criminal Justice Department recently participated in a ground-penetrating radar search in a remote area as part of an effort to locate possible human remains.
The search was conducted in collaboration with John Dowling, Regional Sales Manager for Ditch Witch and Bill Coakley of Ditch Witch Roanoke using a Subsite GeoRanger XR2 ground-penetrating radar system. The GeoRanger XR2 allows trained operators to collect subsurface data and identify anomalies that may require additional examination.
The search required the equipment to be transported and operated in a remote location where terrain, vegetation, soil conditions, and limited accessibility presented additional challenges. The collaboration provided an opportunity to apply forensic search techniques and specialized technology under real-world field conditions.
“The ability to use ground-penetrating radar gives investigators another valuable tool when searching large or difficult areas,” said Dr. Robert E. Rice of Glenville State University’s Criminal Justice Department. “This technology allows investigators to examine areas below the surface without immediately disturbing the site. We appreciate Bill Coakley and Ditch Witch for providing their expertise and assistance during this search.”
Ground-penetrating radar, commonly referred to as GPR, is a noninvasive geophysical method that transmits radar signals into the ground and records changes in subsurface materials. In searches involving possible clandestine burials, GPR may help investigators identify soil disturbances, voids, buried objects, or other subsurface anomalies. GPR results do not independently confirm the presence of human remains, but they can help investigators identify areas that may warrant further evaluation.
The Glenville State University’s Field Forensics program provides students with instruction and practical experience in crime-scene investigation, evidence identification and collection, forensic documentation, and the use of specialized investigative technology. Collaborative field activities also support the university’s commitment to public service and provide opportunities to assist law-enforcement agencies and surrounding communities when appropriate.
