Morris Named Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs at GSC

GLENVILLE, WV - Glenville State College President Dr. Peter Barr has announced that Dr. Gary Morris will step into the role of Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs effective July 1, 2017.

Morris joined the Glenville State College faculty in the fall of 2008 and was promoted to associate professor with tenure in 2014. He has served as Chair of the Science and Mathematics Department since July 2011.

A native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Morris earned his bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Old Dominion University. He went on to earn his master’s degree in chemistry and doctorate in biomedical sciences, both from Old Dominion. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. In 2011, 2012, and 2015 he was selected to participate in the West Virginia Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Summer Fellowship Program. He also dabbles in theater, having taken on several roles in GSC Theatre productions over the past few years. Most recently, Morris has volunteered his time to lead a four-part science and technology reading series at a local community library.

He and his wife, who is a recent GSC graduate, reside in Glenville; they have three children.

“It has been a pleasure serving Glenville State College as a professor and Department Chair these past eight years and it is an honor to have the opportunity to continue serving the College as VP of Academic Affairs. I look forward to the challenges this new appointment will bring, which will allow me to continue working with the faculty and serving our students,” Morris said.

“I’m pleased that Dr. Morris has decided to step into this new role. Having worked with him since his arrival to campus, I know he will continue to be an asset to Glenville State College. As the leader for Academic Affairs he will be a superb advocate for faculty and students,” said GSC President Dr. Peter Barr.

Morris will assume his new duties upon the retirement of current VP of Academic Affairs Dr. Milan Vavrek who has been in the position since 2015. He announced his intention to retire last year.
