GLENVILLE, WV - Emily Ramezan, a 2016 Glenville State College graduate, was presented with the Student Leadership Award at GSC’s Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 7. She is the daughter of Dave and Janette Ramezan of Glenville, West Virginia.

In a nomination for the award, a staff member called Ramezan’s college career, “the most inspiring I have witnessed.”

“When I heard President Barr saying that and then hearing my named called…it was one of the greatest moments of my college career. I felt so proud to be a graduate of Glenville State College where my colleagues had faith in my ability to accomplish great things,” said Ramezan.

Other nominations for the award cited her work ethic, a “commitment to complete what she begins,” and a “maturity to roll with the punches that is rarely seen in a person of her years.”

Beginning in the fall of 2016, she will be attending the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, West Indies.

During her time at GSC, Ramezan was the president of the Alpha Iota chapter of Chi Beta Phi, a Student Marshal, and a member of the Non Profit Leadership Alliance and ENACTUS (originally Students in Free Enterprise). She frequently performed research and presented her findings at several events including Undergraduate Research Day at the State Capitol in 2015 and 2016, at the GSC Pioneer Showcase the past three years, and at the Society of Integrative & Contemporary Biology in Portland, Oregon in 2016. She also participated in the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Research Fellowship Program in spring and summer of 2014 and 2015.

In her spare time she enjoy spending time with her family and pets, watching movies, and traveling.

“My favorite thing about being a student at Glenville State College is the close-knit community feeling. I truly felt that members of the college and of the community were interested in my success and were there to help and advise me as necessary,” she said. “I would like to say thank you to any faculty, staff, or students that nominated me for this award. It was truly an honor to be selected.”

Ramezan joins 42 other graduates who have received the Outstanding Student Leadership Award at GSC since 1977. Names of the honorees are displayed on a permanent plaque in the Heflin Administration Building.
