Spring Semester Underway at GSC

John Brown and John SquiresGlenville, WV— A new semester and fresh snow visit the campus of Glenville State College as students begin their first full weeks of classes. The opening of a new semester is a bustling time for all including student, faculty, and staff.

“The initial enthusiasm and energy shown by the students is my favorite part of a new semester,” states Dr. Amy DeWitt, Assistant Professor of Sociology. “Students are excited about their new schedule and course topics.”

DeWitt is also instructing a new course titled Sex Roles this semester and is looking forward to its path over the next few months. Over the break, DeWitt missed the atmosphere of camaraderie talking with co-workers and students at GSC.

Anyone walking by the Registrar’s Office located in the Administration Building during the first few weeks of a new semester will notice just how busy the campus becomes once students arrive.

“The first week of each semester is so hectic and busy that I sometimes slip off into an almost catatonic state because the phone is ringing off the hook and I can have up to eight or more students in my office waiting for assistance from me,” relates Ann Grogg, Program Assistant in the Registrar’s Office. “But all in all, it is nice to see the students again and know that I can be of service and help them out,” says Grogg.

Surprisingly, three out of three students interviewed agree that they were each ready to come back to campus after the Christmas break. Mike Fox, a junior music education major, admits that he was ready to come back to campus the day after Christmas.

“I missed band. Yeah, it’s sad, but I’m glad to be back and to be in the groove of things,” comments Fox. This GSC junior also confesses that his least favorite part of the new semester is early eight o’clock morning classes. Fox, originally from Craigsville, West Virginia, feels much more relaxed after the Christmas break even though he is carrying a 21-hour load this semester. “It is not hard for me to get back into the groove of the studying. I was looking forward to coming back,” states Fox.

Rachel Burkett, a junior elementary education major, mentions that the best part of a new semester for her is getting to see everyone again. The Romney native also believes the worst element is falling into the habit of a new schedule. Natasha Brown, a freshman chemistry major from Linn, West Virginia, missed seeing her friends over the break and looks forward to the idea of a new beginning with the start of the spring semester. However, she dreads learning where all her new classes are held. With a surplus of student, faculty, and staff enthusiasm, Glenville State College is enjoying the start of a successful spring semester.

However, this newness may soon wear off for students as they begin counting down the days to spring break scheduled March 12-16. Although several months away, the last day for regular classes will be May 4 and finals are planned May 7-10.
