GLENVILLE, WV—Two ‘Meet and Greet’ receptions for high school participants of Glenville State College's Hidden Promise Scholars (HPS) program recently took place in Wetzel County.

The Hidden Promise Scholars program is a component of GSC's Hidden Promise Consortium. The program is an alliance between Glenville State College and county school districts throughout West Virginia and in Ohio and Connecticut aimed at improving communication between higher education and teachers, staff, and students in grades eight through 12. Other goals include increasing the number of high school and college graduates as well as aligning the curricula of K-12 and higher education.

High school scholars are chosen by their school counselors, teachers, and principals. They are then given the opportunity to interact with Glenville State College students and faculty and explore the vistas that a college education opens. The scholars mentor with current college students and take part in campus visits and annual summer camps.

Upon high school graduation, HPS students who opt to attend GSC receive a $1,000 scholarship - renewable annually throughout their enrollment as a full-time student.

The first Wetzel County reception occurred on Thursday, November 13th at Paden City High School in Paden City, West Virginia. Thirteen scholars were recognized from Paden City Middle/High School, New Martinsville Middle School, and Magnolia High School. They and their families met with GSC Hidden Promise staff members, Superintendent Dennis Albright, and Paden City High School Principal Jason Salva. Justin Lambert, current GSC student and HPS mentor for Wetzel County, was also present.

The second reception was held at Valley High School in Pine Grove, West Virginia on Thursday, November 20th. At that event sixteen scholars were recognized from Valley High School, Short Line Middle School, Long Drain Middle School, and Hundred High School. The families also met with HPS staff, Superintendent Albright, Valley High School Principal Jessica Stine, Hundred High School Principal Daniel Gottron, and Short Line Middle School counselor Sherry Croasmun.

The receptions, which were both catered by the New Martinsville Bob Evans, gave parents and students an opportunity to discuss program updates, upcoming summer camps, and other questions they may have had.

“These meetings are important because they provide an opportunity for us to meet face-to-face with students and parents so they understand the many benefits of our Hidden Promise Scholars Program,” said HPS Coordinator Jenny Boggs.
