GLENVILLE, WV—Amanda Wallbrown of Rosedale, WV and Ryan Singleton of Burnsville, WV, two Glenville State College studio art majors, recently took part in the San Angelo National Ceramic Competition in Texas.  While both were honored by their selection to compete, Wallbrown was further recognized with a Merit Award that was accompanied by a $50 prize.

“This is really important to me because out of 764 who applied, only 124 were granted entry into the competition and Ryan and I were the only two artists from West Virginia who made it. Not only did we get to participate in this contest but we got to represent West Virginia and GSC,” said Wallbrown. “Winning an award made the experience that much better,” she added.

“This was an exciting opportunity for me to showcase my art to others and help put GSC on the map,” said Singleton.

Wallbrown was on hand at the opening and awards reception in San Angelo on April 11th to represent GSC. Entries in the competition were judged by ceramic artist Leopold Foulem from Montreal, Canada.

"I am very proud of both of my art students. To get into a juried national art competition is not an easy thing. To receive an award like Amanda did is really a big deal," said GSC Associate Professor of Art Liza Brenner.

The competition is hosted by the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts in San Angelo, Texas every two years and is open to all artists who are residents of the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The show runs until June 29th.
