WVU President Dr. Michael Benson Visits Glenville State University as Part of Statewide Tour

West Virginia University President Dr. Michael Benson visited Glenville State University (GSU) this week as part of his ongoing tour of West Virginia’s 55 counties, a statewide effort launched in July 2025 to connect with communities, businesses, and alumni.

During his visit, Dr. Benson was welcomed at Glenville State’s historic campus with introductions at the President’s House, followed by a luncheon and a campus tour. The occasion highlighted the strong spirit of collaboration among West Virginia’s public higher education institutions and the shared commitment to supporting students across the Mountain State.

Glenville State University President Dr. Mark A. Manchin praised the visit, calling it a meaningful moment for both universities.

“West Virginia University stands as a premier institution in our state, and it is truly an honor to welcome President Benson and his amazing team to our historic campus,” Dr. Manchin said. “Glenville State has a proud legacy of educating West Virginians for over 150 years, and we look forward to strengthening the ties between our institutions as we continue serving the people of this great state.”

Dr. Benson reflected on his longtime friendship and professional respect for Dr. Manchin, noting his contributions to education in West Virginia.

“President Manchin is such a gregarious, outgoing academic leader that’s made a real difference both in public education as a school teacher, superintendent, and state legislator,” Benson said. “He was a member of our board of governors at WVU, and now he’s leading a great public state here at Glenville State. I’ve never been here before; I’ve heard all about it, and they’ve been incredibly hospitable. We look forward to working together with them.”

Founded in 1872, Glenville State University has served as the state’s only centrally located public university, building a rich history of preparing students to lead and succeed in their communities. The visit underscored the value of collaboration and partnership across higher education in West Virginia.
