The film Captain Marvel was released on March 8. This film has been highly anticipated by the fans of Marvel and the numbers show. Captain Marvel, starring actress Brie Larson,  has topped the box office charts for the month of March and is still heavily leading. Captain Marvel is the first film to set the new era of Marvel superheroes as the older ones begin to fade out. Also, Captain Marvel is the first solo female superhero film that Marvel has released.

Captain Marvel is an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. Living on Earth in 1995, she keeps having recurring memories of another life as U.S. Air Force pilot Carol Danvers. With help from Nick Fury, Captain Marvel tries to uncover the secrets of her past while harnessing her special superpowers to end the war with the evil Skrulls. Also, with the film being centered around a female, it highlights the struggles women often go through on a daily basis. The audience watches Carol as a child being told she can’t do something because she’s a girl, they see how she’s catcalled, and having to prove herself as a pilot because of her gender.

The film itself received mixed reviews from movie critics. Some either loved it or hated it. For example, a review by The Rolling Stone says, “But everything in its DNA, from representation (in front of and behind the screen) to its notions of empowerment, radiates our moment right now,”

Meanwhile, another review published by The Wall Street Journal states, “There’s a fundamental dissonance between the depth of her plight and the shallow disorganization of the script.”

Generally, I enjoyed the film. The only critique I have is that the origin story takes too long to play out and may seem a bit boring to viewers who aren’t familiar with Marvel movies. Other than the lengthy introduction of Carol Danvers and Captain Marvel, I believe the film was engrossing, enthralling, and rewarding. It’s also the top-grossing movie of the year 2019 so far and is only likely to be passed by another Marvel film. This film has great representation and the actors are very talented. The chemistry amongst them was astonishing and watching the relationships portrayed on screen was very rewarding for me.

So, overall, I would give Captain Marvel a 7.5/10 and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anyone who just needs a good film to see.
