Glenville State University Network and Internet Acceptable Use 

Glenville State University maintains the philosophy that University network and Internet resources are provided primarily to support the University's educational, research, and administrative missions. Any inappropriate use of these resources is considered a violation of the spirit and intent of this philosophy and should be avoided, regardless of whether the activity is specifically mentioned here or in other University policies.

Use of the University Network

The University network and Internet services are provided for authorized students, faculty, staff, and approved guests. Users are responsible for all activity conducted through their assigned accounts and devices connected to the University network.

Users may not:

  • Share or provide unauthorized access to the University network.
  • Modify, extend, or tamper with University-owned network infrastructure, including wiring, switches, wireless access points, network equipment, or communication hardware.
  • Configure devices or services in a manner that interferes with or compromises the University's network or security.
  • Operate unauthorized servers or network services that conflict with University operations.

Responsible Use

The University network is a shared resource. Users are expected to use network resources responsibly and avoid activities that interfere with the ability of others to access University services.

Activities that consume excessive bandwidth or negatively impact network performance may be restricted or suspended.

Availability

Glenville State University makes every effort to provide reliable network and Internet services but cannot guarantee uninterrupted availability. Network services may be interrupted due to maintenance, equipment failure, security incidents, emergencies, or power outages.

The University assumes no responsibility for loss of time, data, or other damages resulting from network interruptions.

Security

The Office of Technology reserves the right to suspend network access for any user whose activity threatens the reliability, integrity, or security of University information systems.

Examples of prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Possession or use of hacking or penetration testing tools without authorization.
  • Attempting to gain unauthorized access to University systems, accounts, or network resources.
  • Distributing malware, viruses, ransomware, or other malicious software.
  • Willfully disrupting or damaging University technology resources.
  • Operating unauthorized DHCP, DNS, proxy, or other network services.
  • Registering unauthorized domain names or hostnames that interfere with University operations.
  • Sending unsolicited bulk email (spam) or chain letters.
  • Improper network hardware or software configuration that disrupts University services.
  • Activities that create excessive network traffic or degrade service for other users.
  • Circumventing network security controls or monitoring systems.
  • Suspected compromise of a user's computer or account.

Unacceptable Conduct

Users may not use University technology resources to:

  • Transmit or distribute material that is illegal, threatening, harassing, defamatory, obscene, or discriminatory.
  • Engage in academic dishonesty, including unauthorized sharing or copying of assignments, examinations, software, or other protected materials.
  • Misrepresent their identity or impersonate another individual.

Copyright and Legal Compliance

Users are responsible for complying with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including U.S. Copyright Law, the Federal Wire Fraud Statute, and other laws governing the use of electronic communications and information systems.

Violations may result in suspension of network access, disciplinary action through the University's conduct process, and/or civil or criminal prosecution.

Network Monitoring

To protect University information systems, the Office of Technology may monitor, scan, and assess devices and network activity connected to University resources for security vulnerabilities, malware, or other threats. If a device is determined to pose a security risk, the University may temporarily restrict or disconnect that device until the issue has been resolved.

Enforcement

Failure to comply with this policy may result in:

  • Suspension or termination of network access.
  • Loss of University technology privileges.
  • Student or employee disciplinary action.
  • Civil or criminal prosecution when appropriate.
